[i_like_hiding]
Hello...

I don't know if I'm allowed to post this or not, but I am desperate because I have been doing a lot of research, and haven't found any answers. My boyfriend's birthday is coming up next week, and I have been searching for something fun (but not too expensive) to do in the bay area. Particularly, I have been trying to find a place that has laser light shows! Like one with The Beatles or Pink Floyd. We have always been wanting to go to one!

So, I was wondering if anyone knew of any? I have been searching and searching - and no luck! Just rental places - maybe they don't exist in the bay area? Any other particularly fun and cheaper things to do? I have done research on this as well, but it's hard to find things that are off the beaten path, and not just normal tourist attractions.

Also... any recommendations on any good places to eat? Ones that are especially fun and have a fun atmosphere (again, not too expensive, but maybe up to $20 a person for dinner), we are also vegetarians (but eat fish), so it being veg friendly would be helpful :).

Thanks so much for any suggestions in advance!

Where in the city can I buy China Glaze brand nail polish? Pure Beauty doesn't have them. I know I can get some at Ulta in Tanforan, but I don't wanna drive.

Odds are very high that I am going to get laid off very soon and I'm a mess right now so bare with me. My company has been doing major layoffs and we haven't even been bought out yet. Unfortunaly I pay all of the bills. I know I can collect unemployment and while I'm doing this I'm going to go to school. My local community college offers fast track classes for adults so you can get a degree in a year. The only thing on there I'm interested in is Early Childhood Development but I'm not sure what I can do with that. I don't want to teach so if that is the only thing I can do with that I'll do one of the business/computer degrees. My passion is psychology but I don't want to be going in that direction and get a call to come back to work. But if I don't get called back or find something better I want something I can use.

My actual question is about financial aid. I can't collect unemployment and pay for school because that money if going to feed my kids. I'm afraid that we made too much money last year for me to qualify for anything but I sure as hell can't pay for it now and I really don't want to take out a loan. Do they look at the fact that you have kids and give you more money? When I went to college the first time FASA gave me $200 a semester because of how much my father makes and because I had a bank account that I knew nothing about.

I also heard that someone will pay for a year of school. I'm not sure if that is unemployment of my company. I need to find that one out.

purchasing a vacuum cleaner [17 Jul 2009|10:06am]

[sceneasfuck]
i have two cats who shed a lot - i'm talkin' huge tufts of hair floating around my apartment. i could knit a sweater with all the hair they shed in any given day. brushing them doesn't seem to do much difference, and sweeping just pushes the hair around behind furniture and in corners. so i'm thinking i just need to buck up and buy a vacuum cleaner.

i've never bought a vacuum cleaner before - when i lived with carpets, i had a hand-me-down kirby that was older than i am. so i don't really know what to look for or what brands are appropriate. i do know that i need the vacuum to work on hardwoods, and it would be nice if it also worked on upholstery (since the cats shed all over the couch, too). a hose attachment would be nice so i can get the baseboards and behind furniture, and i'd like it to be bagless. i also am aiming at spending around $40-$50, although i will pay up to $80 if i need to.

so, what do you think, poor_skills? i live in tennessee.

Unemployment Benefits Extension/Appeal [17 Jul 2009|01:46pm]

[angeofleak]
Hi Guys,

Let me know if this has been asked but I couldn't find it in the tags/memories.

I was laid off last June and my benefits ran out at the beginning of this month. I called in on Tuesday and usually the funds are direct deposited into my account by the following Thursday (yesterday). It wasn't deposited so I went to the local office yesterday and filled out paperwork which I believe was for the extension.

I overheard them talking about how another woman needed to be switched to a new claim number possibly since it's trying to pull funds from her previous employer which is similar to my story.

I just received in the mail today a form that was dated 7/16 and says I'm ineligible for benefits. It says I have a choice to file an appeal.

I should qualify for the extension because in Chicago, unemployment is at 10%.

I'm confused because do I need to qualify for the extension or file an appeal? Should I go back to my local office to figure this out or will it eventually work itself out? About how long will this process take?

Any input is appreciated.

Book # 35 [17 Jul 2009|08:48pm]

books

[expresionist]
Book Title: Kissing Doorknobs

Author: Terry Spencer Hesser

Category: YA, fiction, mental health

# of pages: 149 (plus six pages of resources and information)

My rating of the book, F- [worst] to A [best].: A

Short description/summary of the book: From the back cover: When Tara was 11 years old, she heard the phrase that changed her life: step on a crack, break your mother's back... And before Tara knew what was happening, she was counting the cracks in the sidewalk everywhere she went, in constant fear of breaking her mother's back. If she missed one crack or lost count, she had to go home and start all over again.

Over time, Tara's quirks changed -- and multiplied. To calm herself, she arranged her food carefully on the plate, chatted with troll dolls, and recited praters over and over. She didn't like behaving so oddly; she only knew she had to if she wanted to feel better.

Tara's troubles only got worse when, one day, she developed a new ritual: She kissed her fingers and touched a doorknob...

Terry Spencer Hesser has written a funny, compelling, and sensitive story about a teenage girl afflicted with Obsessive_Compulsive disorder and the way it affects her relationship with friends and family.

My Thoughts: I absolutely loved this book. It has become one of my favorites. Like many other people, I have OCD. I've had a long fight with it. The battles and triumphs Hesser has written about in her debut book are very accurate and effective. I don't think it's possible to describe compulsions, obsessions and the pain they bring any better than Hesser has in Kissing Doorknobs.

I highly recommend this book for anyone that is fighting or knows of anyone that is fighting with Obsessive-Compulsive disorder.

Books read this year: 35/50.

cooking for one? [17 Jul 2009|07:35pm]

[purplesocks]
Hi! My husband will be out of the country for roughly the next two weeks, and for the first time in a few years, I will be cooking dinners for just myself. I'm making a grocery list right now and would like to add a few meals to it that are a bit more unique than what one would normally resort to! I remember that cooking for just one person (and not having tons of leftovers) can be a bit of a challenge!

Any ideas for meals for one that are quick-ish (or some that are not terribly quick, as there is a weekend within that period!), won't result in tons of leftover food or ingredients, and are a bit more interesting than your run-of-the-mill frozen pizza and taco kit? I'm really looking for things that are tasty and interesting enough that I won't be enticed to eat out every night. I would also appreciate not having tons of leftover food or ingredients. I would love any suggestions.

Alterations [17 Jul 2009|05:09pm]

Hi all!

I have a dress with a rather complicated hem that needs to be shortened - can you recommend a good, reasonably-priced tailor? Nordstrom quoted me $52 and that seems a bit much, but I really don't want this dress ruined. I've looked on Yelp and haven't learned anything conclusive.

I live in Ingleside, so anything in the southwestern part of the city or the nearby suburbs would be best.

TIA!

The Marriage Bureau for Rich People The Marriage Bureau for Rich People by Farahad Zama

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Charming, utterly charming. It will be exotic for Western readers and will fill the gentle romance reader expectations.

Mr. Ali, retired Indian civil servant, sets up a marriage bureau in the veranda of his house in a coastal Indian city. It's a cross between a good Alexander McCall Smith novel and the gentle romance of a Austen type novel.

We follow Mr Ali answering his customers demands of brides and grooms, his own family problems and the sweet romance of his young assistant.

The style is a little dry and matter of fact. This is not poetic prose. It's more the daily life of people living in a modern India still ruled by traditions and castes.

I enjoyed it greatly for what it was a gentle romance set in a country very foreign to me. It made me want to read more about this country and its traditions. What more can you ask entertainment, a little education and a desire to know more.

scared out of my witts! [16 Jul 2009|05:14pm]

So money has been tight, as I'm sure you all know and can relate to.

I overdrafted a couple of days ago, about a hundred dollars for my electric bill.  I've been trying to make ends meet and I was hoping that they wouldn't run the check until tomorrow morning, but they ran it today.  Another check ran through on top of that one that overdrafted and I checked online, to find out it's been returned to sender.  The check was to Walgreens for subscriptions.  I don't normally do this, but a year ago I had overdrafted quite a bit.  How do I handle this?  I get paid in the morning so the funds will be there, I'm just not sure what to do, who to call, and I'm gonna be sick.  :/

Has this ever happened to you? [17 Jul 2009|11:49am]

[sooz]
I use a public washing machine in my complex and this is like the 4th time something like this has happened to my clothes. It looks like oil / wax or chapstick or something got on my dress. It doesn't look as noticable in the photo, but when I put it on it's a HUGE stain. I'm thinking about dying it black in hopes that will hide it, because I literally wore this dress once. It wasn't very expensive, but seriously.

The worst part is that it doesn't wash out and I can't figure out what's doing it to make it stop. My other half things the fabric softner is doing it.

Legal to charge different rents for the same apartment unit? [17 Jul 2009|11:52am]

poor_skills

[loonylupinlover]
I'm currently renting a studio apartment in southern California, near but not in Los Angeles, while I'm going to school. Rent is $1175 (yes, it's awful. but I don't have to commute, utilities are included, and it's not much more than other apartments in the area), up from $1075 last year. Now I'm checking out the website for my building and it states that for new residents, studios are going for $859. I've tried looking up online if this is acceptable or even legal to do but don't seem to be using the correct search terms. I am not in a rent-controlled area.

1) Is it legal to charge $300 difference in rent to the exact same units? They all have the same floor plan and the only different between the units is what floor they're on. There's no reason given for charging $859.

2) I've already signed my lease for the year, it expires in 2010. I really don't want to move as I like the room and location. If I were to haggle well enough with my landlord, is it possible for her to change the rent even though I'm in this new lease? I think it would be, as I didn't start at the new rent until a month after signing my new lease, but I'm not sure. This is the only apartment I've ever rented so I'm a bit of a n00b when it comes to these things.

3) Tips for discussing it with her and standing my ground without being rude? She's a nice enough person, but I am never sure how to word myself when saying something like "Hey, why the hell are you charging these people $300 less than me when you already know I'm a good tenant? Lower my rent!" (This is not what I actually intend to say, lol.)
